He has sensory integration disorder and needs stimulation to feel where he is in space. I have always felt that stimming serves a purpose for people with sensory issues and Autism.

His stimming by flipping through books and watching movie clips over and over has helped him learn how to read and how to speak. We are seeing the benefits of all that time he has spent "stimming" now that he is using a communication device.

He stops when he needs to do work at school or go to the bathroom or go to sleep, etc. He has a sensory schedule at school and has unlimited access to sensory objects. He wears a necklace that he fidgets with constantly.
He makes a lot of eye contact now, which we have never forced, and when he wants to hang out with us it is because he wants to.

My son has become a very well behaved, sweet, intelligent boy and I really believe it is because we never tried to stop his stimming. I see no negatives to his stimming. But than again, I have come to terms with the fact that he will always stim and always be Autistic.Queenbuv3https://www.blogger.com/profile/10767805292831696201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3920171049284403071.post-11731678652791024652009-10-20T10:02:43.257-04:002009-10-20T10:02:43.257-04:00i think this is the article i have been looking fo...i think this is the article i have been looking for..Stimming as u know is a terribly big issue for me..Shirin's Arthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11792444567832859037noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3920171049284403071.post-21450466478814216642009-10-20T09:40:58.830-04:002009-10-20T09:40:58.830-04:00Yes. Sometimes it's calming (for the boys anyway) in which case we generally don't intervene. In the other cases, coming up with alternatives that they will find appealing can be a challenge sometimes :).danettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15555927841950877805noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3920171049284403071.post-27839537695226276292009-10-18T20:58:02.997-04:002009-10-18T20:58:02.997-04:00Coming off an incredibly stimmy weekend, this is r...Coming off an incredibly stimmy weekend, this is right on time. Sometimes a "stim" is calming. Stim makes nice shorthand (we all know what we're talking about) but only thinking of them as stimulation may complicate uncovering the purpose of the behavior.Mike Fieldshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12664929561638450020noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3920171049284403071.post-49245289155037867062009-10-16T15:50:39.495-04:002009-10-16T15:50:39.495-04:00I love this, it is so helpful. I give him peanut butter and bananas. It seems to help.
